Who Is That?
Apparently, there’s this big football game. I guess its called the Superbowl. And apparently, there’s this football team, called the Saints or something, who have never been to this huge football game. I have a few things to say about this.
First of all, OH MY GOODNESS!! THIS IS A HUGE DEAL! The Saints have been waiting for their entire existence to go to the damned Superbowl! And if any team deserves to go, the Saints do. They come from one of the best and most unique cities in the United States, and they have one of the hugest and most loyal fan bases I have ever seen. I have to give a shout out to all those fans who have stuck with this team through all of their less fruitful seasons. With that being said, I feel the need to defend my own (seemingly) bandwagon support of dem Saints. I’m going to point out that my uncle played for the Saints waaaaay back in the late 60s when the team was known as the “Ain’ts.” Granted, he was on the farm team, but it still counts! So really, I’ve been a fan since birth! Plus, I love football, so its not like I’m watching these Saints games because everyone else is, I am actually comprehending whats happening.
Now I have to talk about the absolute craziness surrounding this game. I was downtown in the French Quarter last night, and already there are countless numbers of Saints fans, homegrown or otherwise, running around in their Saints jerseys and T-Shirts. The most common greeting heard among groups of strangers is not “Hello,” but instead “Who Dat?” Literally every single souvenir shop in the Quarter is bursting with Saints gear, from beads to shirts to feather boas to umbrellas. I personally have already been yelled at by my neighbors for playing Saints pump up songs too loud this morning. Whoops. I’m just excited! I mean, who doesn’t love a Saints themed remake of a Miley Cyrus song?
I have witnessed little kids being taught the “Who Dat” song by their after school moderators. A little bit cultish and reminiscent of brainwash? Yes. But awesome nevertheless. My own institution of higher learning is considering canceling classes tomorrow of the Saints win (which is that even a question? They’re going to win. Period.). Actually, the President of my school is in Miami for the game as we speak, probably tailgating already. Which I think calls for the canceling of classes. I mean come on.
I also gotta talk about this silly controversy over the phrase “Who Dat”. I guess the Superbowl people want to make money, so they tried to claim “Who Dat” as their trademark, and ordered stores to stop selling shirts and things that said “Who Dat” on them. Which is really very impractical. What, are they going to go to every hole-in-the-wall shop on Bourbon and confiscate every single bit of supposed illegal Saints paraphernalia? Yeah, didn’t think so. Plus, its very hard to trademark an expression that is so deeply engrained in an entire subculture of football fans, and really in an entire city. “Who Dat” is not just a football cheer, its a cultural trademark of New Orleans, and I don’t think you can effectively claim it as a Superbowl slogan. Nope. Plus, the entire world supports New Orleans on this issue. The New York Times in the U.K. posted a video of their staff saying “Who Dat!” I tried to put it up, hope it works. Check it out.
AND ANOTHER THING. This is Superbowl 44. The Saints were awarded their franchise in 1966, 44 years ago. Obama is the 44th president (irrelevant, but a nice correlation). COINCIDENCE? I think not. Basically, we’re going to win.
ONE MORE THING. I’m going down to the Quarter tonight to watch the game. I really hope we win because if we don’t, I shudder to think of the atmosphere that will result. Hopefully, it will be a repeat of the playoff game! Speaking of which, I made it into a video of Bourbon Street after the Saints won against the Vikings that was played on ABC news, as well as the Ellen Degeneres Show. Here it is, see if you can spot me! Also please note my friend’s (we’ll call him Jess in order to protect his dignity) lack of response to the Saints scoring the winning field goal. Look for him in the bottom right hand corner. He’s wearing a grey sweater.
UPDATE: I am blog challenged and can’t figure out how to embed the video, so I’m putting it up in a separate post.
Alright. I think I’ve talked about this game enough. An interesting side note, I woke up this morning with an intense craving for orange juice. However, there is nowhere at this godforsaken little school to get orange juice before 11:30 in the morning.
miles run….haha.
